“Mojo: The Fringes Ch.01 - Stained” is an animated CGI short film, set in an fictional universe called Mojo. It is the second landscape of an animated trilogy in which 3 landscapes (The Floods, The Fringes, and The Blades) depict a world where rituals of contemporary Black culture shape the environment and its ecosystems.
Stained is the first chapter of a mini series centered around a landscape known as “The Fringes”. The film depicts an environment in which gangs use colored flora to mark territory. We follows a sensitive tea master, Demetrius, a member of the Crimson Needles gang. Haunted by the voice of his elder/O.G. Bump, Demetrius relives the memory of being reprimanded for his fascination with a blue herb; forbidden by the red gang to which he belongs.The film is a small glimpse into the intimate life of one “The Fringes” many inhabitants.
Stained imagines an alternative ecology that foregrounds under-explored narratives . It re-frames gang culture as a landscape phenomenon and recasts those affiliated as environmental caretakers, botanist and folk healers.
